Road safety: The Collectivité checks the conformity of registration plates

The Collectivité de Saint-Martin is currently stepping up road checks to force motorists driving with non-compliant registration plates to comply. An awareness-raising period was first held over the last 18 months and is now giving way to a police check resulting in a fine.

Road safety: The Collectivité checks the conformity of registration plates

Since the adoption of the resolution aimed at regulating the registration of vehicles in accordance with the Vehicle Registration System (SIV) specific to Saint-Martin, the Collectivité has given the users concerned sufficient time (18 months) to regularize their situation. Despite this, many vehicles continue to circulate with non-compliant plates, often from other territories such as Saint-Barthélemy or mainland France.

Faced with this persistence, the Collectivité of Saint-Martin took the initiative, two months ago, to launch targeted control operations to ensure compliance with the regulations. These controls, initiated by the Collectivité, received the support of the National Gendarmerie and, in some cases, were carried out exclusively by the Territorial Police.

Objectives of the controls:

  • Control and visibility of the vehicle fleet: Identifying the vehicles present on our territory and linking them to their owners is essential for better administrative management.
  • Strengthening road safety: This approach is part of the Collectivité's road safety plan, where clear identification of vehicles is crucial to prevent abuse and guarantee safe mobility.
  • Fight against irregularities: The lack of connection with the national file and the Saint-Barthélemy file complicates the management of plates from these systems, often found on our roads in violation.

The Collectivité reminds us that driving with non-compliant plates constitutes an offence punishable by penalties. These checks aim to ensure compliance with the regulations and to protect users in a secure and structured environment. We invite the owners of the vehicles concerned to regularise their situation quickly.
