The European Union and the ORs, a strategic partnership

The European Union supports the development of the most distant regions, called outermost regions (OR), of which Saint-Martin is part of the French Overseas Collectivité (COM).

Given their structural and permanent constraints (remoteness, difficult terrain and climates, small surface area, dependence, etc.), it is essential that, on the basis of Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the EU (TFEU), the European policies are adapted to their situation to help improve the daily lives of their populations.

With this in mind, the ORs work in close collaboration with European institutions such as the European Commission, the European Parliament as well as their respective member states. As part of these partnerships, the lobbying deployed by all the ORs constitutes an important element, having enabled a certain number of collective advances for our territories.

This status also offers an unprecedented opportunity to strengthen economic, social and cultural exchanges between the Saint-Martin territory and the European continent. It symbolizes attachment to common values of solidarity, cooperation and European integration.

How does Saint-Martin defend its interests with the EU as an OR?
