Condolences from the Presidency: Fatal accident occurred yesterday in Orient Bay.
December 11, 2020“We were all shocked by the accident.
“We were all shocked by the accident that occurred yesterday in Orient Bay which resulted in the death of a young 38-year-old woman who was beginning a long stay on our island.
The nature of The victim's injuries and the first testimonies collected as part of the gendarmerie investigation lead us to believe that it could be a violent death and bites from a large marine predator. The autopsy currently underway will confirm or refute this hypothesis. While awaiting these results, it is appropriate to remain cautious.
As a precautionary measure, we have decided, in conjunction with the COD of the prefecture, to prohibit swimming and water activities requiring water, along the entire coastline of the French part, for a period of 48 hours from December 10, 2020.
I ask each of you to be vigilant and respect the terms of the territorial decree taken for this purpose. The territorial police are responsible for its proper execution, surveillance patrols have been organized since yesterday on the beaches, in partnership with the gendarmerie.
At this time, all our thoughts are directed towards the victim, and his relatives. The elected officials of the Territorial Council and the staff of the Community join me in sending our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of this young woman. The Community will do everything possible to support the family and facilitate administrative procedures. Our services are at its entire disposal.
The Community works alongside the prefectural authorities and we will not fail, through the COD set up yesterday, to keep you informed of the progress of the investigation carried out by the public prosecutor. ".
