Cleanliness of the territory: new voluntary waste drop-off points

The Collectivité de Saint-Martin, represented by its 2nd Vice-President in charge of the Ecological Transition, Mrs. Bernadette DAVIS, is currently carrying out actions aimed at improving waste management. An opportunity to invite the press, Tuesday, October 29, 2024, to present to users the new voluntary contribution points intended for sorting waste.

Cleanliness of the territory: new voluntary waste drop-off points

Objective: to deploy a collective effort in favor of the cleanliness of the territory.

Strongly committed to improving waste management in its territory, the Collectivité de Saint-Martin has implemented new systems allowing users to take full part in sorting and recycling waste. 125 new voluntary drop-off points have been installed in the neighbourhoods, with new drop-off points for glass and plastic waste and 8 large bins for green waste and bulky items.

Voluntary drop-off points to help you recycle your waste

It is now strictly forbidden to deposit waste near household waste bins (those with orange lids). Irregular deposits will now be penalized to avoid cluttering public spaces and the associated nuisances.

Place bulky items and green waste in the new masonry cells

Green waste and bulky items must be placed in the new cells (masonry PAV) or directly at the recycling center. See the location of the cells on the Collectivité website.

Green waste : only plant residues (grass, branches, leaves)

Bulky items : furniture (no visible points or sharp parts).

Household appliances, tires, batteries, oils, rubble and toxic waste must not be placed in the cells. They must be taken to the recycling center.

Optimizing the waste collection service

Household waste, bulky waste and green waste collection operations are carried out 7 days a week by the Collectivité's service providers. Collection begins at 11 p.m., all year round.

For health reasons, you are requested to dispose of your waste after 6 p.m.

Strengthening the recycling of household packaging waste

Household packaging waste must be sorted and placed in the yellow and green bins.

Green terminals: reserved for glass packaging (bottles, jars, glass pots).

The glass deposited in these terminals is crushed locally to produce sand and gravel.

Yellow terminals: reserved for light packaging: plastics (bottles, flasks, food packaging), metals (cans, tins, aerosols), cardboard (product packaging, food cartons), newspapers and paper.

Once collected, this packaging is packaged at the Cul de Sac eco-site and sent to a factory located in Guadeloupe which carries out additional sorting.

Increase control of usage and sanction bad practices

The Collectivité regularly deploys awareness campaigns for public service users in order to improve waste management. After this awareness period, the brigade responsible for equipment inspection will carry out checks and apply sanctions to bad contributors to the waste sorting and cleanliness effort. The territorial police, even though this mission does not fall within its priority prerogatives, occasionally carry out support checks.

The objective of this public policy is to promote environmentally friendly behavior by respecting the strict instructions implemented by the Collectivité.
