Conference of the Parties (COP): Saint-Martin organizes itself against climate change
In line with the international COP on climate change, the Conference of the Parties in Saint-Martin produced its roadmap for 2030. This work made it possible to identify local issues in order to find joint solutions for the territory.

The State and the Collectivité of Saint-Martin are stakeholders in the fight against climate change, on a territorial scale.
Friday, January 10, 2025, the plenary restitution of the work of the COP of Saint-Martin was held at the Grand Case Beach Club in the presence of the First Vice-President Alain RICHARDSON, the Vice-President Dominique Démocrite LOUISY, the Secretary General of the Prefecture Mr. Fabien SESE, representatives of local institutions as well as civil society, all concerned by these climate issues.
Initiated by the Ecological Transition Department of the Collectivité of Saint-Martin, the reflection work was organized in 4 thematic workshops which each met 3 times to carry out the territorial diagnosis, identify the levers and finally propose the appropriate actions.
Three major issues emerged and were imposed in a cross-cutting manner: land control, work to raise awareness among the general public and the need to cooperate on these subjects with Sint Maarten.

The issue of greenhouse gas emissions was obviously at the heart of concerns, in particular the consequences linked to human activity and the need for the territory to adopt a trajectory of moderation and reduction of its own emissions.
Beyond the fruitful discussions of these workshops, it was decided to continue the efforts deployed within the framework of the COP (a legal obligation in the Regions but a free choice of elected officials in our territory), by creating a monitoring and animation committee and by establishing real governance under the impetus of the territorial council of Saint-Martin. Once the structure is operational, it will be necessary to seek public funding and prioritize the actions to be carried out collectively.
The work carried out within the framework of the COP of Saint-Martin mobilized approximately 200 actors of the territory. 25 levers have already been identified and translated into 47 actions to be deployed by 2030. This roadmap was developed jointly by the stakeholders, based on a consensus of all the actors involved in this work.
Let us recall that as mentioned in the IPCC report, " Small tropical islands are on the front line of the effects of climate change ". The Collectivité of Saint-Martin and its elected officials have perfectly understood the urgency of addressing these issues as quickly as possible.
