Animal shelter and pound

The Collectivité de Saint-Martin is committed to ensuring the well-being of stray and domestic animals while protecting residents. As part of this approach, an ambitious project to build a permanent pound and animal shelter has been launched. These modern and adapted facilities will be operational in 2026. In the meantime, a temporary pound is in operation in Grand Case to take care of stray animals.

Pound Missions

How the shelter works

The future shelter, scheduled to open in 2026, will provide a secure and caring environment for unclaimed or abandoned animals. Its missions will include:

  • Care and Protection : Animals will be fed, cared for, and placed in a safe environment.
  • Adoption Promotion : Healthy animals will be put up for adoption to give them a new chance in a loving family.
  • Education and awareness : Organization of workshops and campaigns to promote animal protection and encourage responsible adoption.

Dangerous dogs: regulations and responsibilities

The Collectivité pays particular attention to the management of so-called dangerous dogs , classified into two categories according to the law:

  1. Attack dogs (category 1) : such as Pitbulls or Tosas without pedigree.
  2. Guard or defense dogs (category 2) : such as pedigree Rottweilers.

Owners of these dogs must comply with strict obligations:

  • Permit to own : issued after a behavioral assessment of the dog and training of the owner.
  • Identification and vaccination : The dog must be identified (chip or tattoo) and up to date with its vaccinations, particularly against rabies.
  • Security measures : Wearing a muzzle is mandatory in public places, and access to certain areas is prohibited.
  • No abandonment : Owners are responsible for their animals and may be penalized if they do not comply with the rules.

How to report or recover an animal?

  • Reporting a stray animal : Contact the Grand Case temporary pound, indicating the location and description of the animal. A team will intervene to capture it.
  • Finding your pet : If your pet has been lost, contact the pound with a detailed description and documents proving ownership (photo, vaccination record, etc.).
  • Adopt an animal : Once the shelter opens in 2026, you will be able to meet the animals available for adoption. For now, adoptions can be arranged by appointment through the temporary pound.

Help us protect animals

You can contribute to the mission of the pound and the shelter by adopting an animal, respecting the regulations on pets and raising awareness among those around you about responsibility towards animals.
