Doctor of medicine and gynecologist-obstetrician graduated from the prestigious Harvard University in the United States, Michel Petit worked in the medical field for nearly 40 years. He began his activity in Boston before returning to Saint-Martin and setting up his practice at the Sint Maarten hospital (SMMC) where he practiced for nearly 30 years. It is then shared between the SMMC and a private clinic on the island of Anguilla. He ended his medical career in 2020 but remains involved with the SMMC of which he is a member of the board of directors.

The end of his professional career marks the beginning of his political involvement. He was elected 4th vice-president of the Collectivité of Saint-Martin during the 2022 territorial elections.
