President Gibbs on the ground of reconstruction
President Daniel Gibbs began a series of field visits, Friday April 6, 2018, aimed at discussing with professionals and the population and taking the pulse of reconstruction.
This first trip, after the visits linked to the emergency phase, was placed under the theme of the reconstruction of tourist establishments.
While he is in regular contact with hoteliers, the President chose to go to Grand Case, to meet of two Guest House owners who will soon start their reconstruction work. He also made a stop at Orient Bay, where the beach restaurants will be rebuilt. The President then took the boat to Pinel where he met the two restaurateurs who have just reopened their establishment. Other visits of this type are planned in all sectors of the island, to meet professionals and the population.
Through this visit, President Gibbs wanted to see for himself the projects of these professionals and work undertaken or to come. On Boulevard de Grand Case, the President visited the Guest House Hévéa which has already reopened its doors, but which must carry out renovation work, and the Guest House Free Breeze where the owner must rebuild its roof and redo its interiors. Major projects carried out by professionals determined and motivated to relaunch their activity.
On Orient Bay beach, the Sindextour company has started work on the new beach restaurant Bikini Beach on plot AW33 of the community. Four building permits were issued to Sindextour for the reconstruction of Kakao Beach, Waikiki Beach and Kontiki. The Coco Beach will also be rebuilt to put the Five Stars back in working order.
The Community is also working on the project to rehabilitate the carbets on plot AW34, the objective being to allow holders of Temporary Occupation Authorizations (AOT) to restart their activity for the next tourist season.
On Pinel islet, the President went to meet the owner of the restaurant Le Yellow Beach which reopened its doors 15 days ago after having rebuilt the entire structure. Same situation at Karibuni, which has just reopened its doors after a total renovation of the restaurant.
All the establishments visited were either strongly impacted by Irma or completely destroyed, the President wanted to encourage them in their reconstruction process . Regarding the recommendations of the Town Planning Department in terms of reconstruction, beach establishments are authorized to build a permanent part for the storage of equipment in the event of a cyclone alert, and a demountable part.
These visits, carried out around the community's 2018 forecast budget, which provides for aid for the reconstruction of Guest houses and aid to affected businesses, with the support of European FEDER funds, will continue in the coming weeks in order to work as closely as possible of the needs of professionals and to exchange regularly with them.
Note that a budget will also be allocated to help with the reconstruction of roofs for individuals in precarious situations, before the hurricane season. The terms of this community assistance are currently being developed. Field visits to meet the residents concerned are also scheduled between now and the end of June.
